CHIRALLY CORRECT ACTIVES
Medik8 always includes in its formulations the chirally correct form of an active ingredient where appropriate, without regard to manufacturing cost.
The topic of ‘Chirality’ is concerned with getting the most from the active ingredients and limiting unnecessary irritation. A chiral molecule has a mirror-image form. A molecule can be chiral or non-chiral. It is the chiral form of the molecule that is the active form of the ingredient. Hence for effective product formulation this concept is critical when it comes to effective results.
Many skin care manufacturers include the wrong isomer of a chiral molecule because they are unaware of the importance of stereochemistry in formulating cosmetics or are looking to save costs, as the purified chiral-correct form of the active ingredient can cost up to 20 times more. In addition, using the wrong chiral isomer can actually damage the body rather than simply be inactive.
100% SOAP-FREE CLEANSERS (and no harsh detergents either)
All of Medik8’s cleansers are 100% soap free, to ensure that the delicate skin balance is not disrupted. Traditional soaps and even retained glycerin soaps are highly alkaline and strip the skin of oils causing dehydration and dryness (see enemies of the skin). We also avoid harsh detergent soap alternatives which can damage the lipid barrier of the skin causing irritation and dryness. Medik8 cleansers are therefore
purposely mild however they are still very effective at removing excess oils, grease and make-up. We do not use: Soaps (even retained glycerin varieties); SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ethoxylated Sulphate); SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate); Sulphates (ie. No ALES etc.). Medik8 cleanser are produced according to the principles green-chemistry (use of green manufacturing techniques ie. no ethoxylation)
100% PARABEN FREE
Whilst parabens are excellent preservatives they have come under increasing scrutiny over safety in recent years. It is for this reason that all Medik8 products are 100% paraben-free, in alignment with the demands of the discerning consumer.
pH BALANCED
All aqueous Medik8 products are pH balanced to ensure that the skin’s delicate equilibrium is not compromised, whilst also enhancing the product’s stability. Most products operate at the skin’s natural slightly acidic pH of 5.5 but certain exfoliating products containing fruit acids are purposefully formulated to lower pH’s to encourage the sloughing off of dead cells. Conversely, for eye cleansing products, the pH is raised to 7.7 which is the same as tears.
AIRLESS PACKAGING
Medik8 uses airless packaging, where appropriate, to ensure that the integrity of the product is not compromised. This is because in certain cream and aqueous formulations it is important to keep certain active ingredients away from oxygen in the air, as this would lead to product degradation.
NANOSOMES & LIPOSOMES
Medik8 uses premium refined light oils as carriers for many of its active ingredients due to the fact that oil is able to penetrate the skin more effectively then water. Where Medik8 uses an emulsion or water-based medium to carry the active ingredients, Nanosonic or Liposome technology has been applied to enhance the penetration of the active ingredients.
ENHANCED STABILITY & POTENCY
Medik8 manufactures their products in small batch sizes to ensure that they are potent and effective when they reach the client. We manufacture our Retinol and our C-Tetra lines a maximum of 30 days before the products are dispatched to cold storage. This guarantees that the products are still powerful and effective when they reach the consumer.
Medik8 use retinol and vitamin C derivatives that have reliable stability credentials backed-up by independent batch test data proving potency. Medik8 incorporate these powerful but ‘fragile’ actives into a simple oil-film medium (see time-release delivery system) to ensure their stability – retinol and vitamin C can easily degrade when formulated into an emulsion. The use of ancillary antioxidants (eg. vitamin E) further protects the oil formula from degradation.
TIME RELEASE DELIVERY SYSTEM
Medik8 has developed a unique encapsulated film fluid polymer for retinol products. By encapsulating reactive molecules such as all-trans-retinol, this technology has the double effect of both enhancing stability/freshness but also in more slowly releasing the retinol molecules from the formula to the skin. Proven in Franz cell diffusion experiments, Medik8’s time-release delivery system can prevent the usually highly irritation caused to skin from therapeutic doses of retinol by maintaining a slow but continuous delivery of the active ingredient, and avoiding the spike and trough of molecule delivery in regular retinol products.
BROAD SPECTRUM ANTIOXIDANTS
Medik8 offer varying levels of broad spectrum protection against free-radicals providing defence against a wide variety of damaging free radicals. Full protection is essential in order to benefit from antioxidant technology. Antioxidants are a key technology research area for Medik8.
BROAD SPECTRUM UV PROTECTION
Medik8 SPF products protect skin from the full spectrum of UV to ensure that UV damage is minimised. Medik8 SPF products offer full coverage from UV (280nm to 400nm). We always remind customers that sunscreens are only half the battle against UV damage and that a good quality antioxidant serum should be applied regularly alongside sunscreen products.
PEPTIDES
Peptides are protein fragments made up of amino-acids which can signal for production of structural proteins by cells. Peptides perform a variety of functions. Peptides function as messengers in the skin, allowing the epidermis and dermis to communicate more efficiently. This may sound insignificant, but research is showing their effect to be quite measurable. As we age, communication diminishes within the skin, resulting in decreased collagen production and an accumulation of degraded elastin fibres. Medik8 offer a range of products containing Peptides.
TITANIUM SKIN NEEDLING
