Stress: How to understand it and transform it through Rebirthing

STRESS

How to understand it and transform it, into Success’ Consciousness, through Breathwork

Stress is a modern term used to define states of inner anxiety. They make fluidity be difficult when producing and obtaining material and spiritual rewards. These states occur in all scopes of life. They detonate processes of personal, interpersonal and transpersonal non-communication.

For some people, symptoms like bad moods, prolonged tiredness, anxiety, apathy, non-motivation or negative emotions at the tip of their skin, are normal in today’s world. For me, this is the beginning, or worst than that, it is an unbalance development in our system. If, from the beginning, we “become aware” of these symptoms, we could count on a large period of grace to correct them from their cause and not only treat them superficially or urgently, when the situation becomes worse.

Stress is not foreign to us. From the beginnings of time, we have been exposed to it. All of us, someway or the other, are affected by this “century’s illness”, specially those responsible for leading the civil and governmental society. That means, those who make an organized life here and now possible.

The difficulty on talking about healing this “illness” lies on that, once it is placed on the organism, its effect becomes a cause. That means, stress continuously feeds itself producing more stress.

One of its most important effects is breathing’s inhibition. By repetition, it becomes a cause itself, generating other blocks that can express themselves by lack of creativity and productivity or as an emotional and physical unbalance. Therefore, consciously retaking breathing relieves us. It balances and frees us.

“...An oxygen atom can transform itself into a part of a happy thought, it joins itself with a neurotransmitter or, it can send a fear’s chill through our body when an adrenaline molecule gets involved... Every breath we take is a creative act. Air’s molecules are a fortuitous chaos but when they enter the body, they magically acquire a purpose or an identity. Is there an act that can be more creative than this?”. Dr. D.Chopra

Besides breathing’s inhibition, other cause-effects of stress are: repressed emotions, frustration, lack of purpose in life, bad nutrition, disregarded illnesses, poor connection with nature, lack of exercise and movement, unfulfilled wishes because of lack of a coherent acting, difficulty on forgiving, living with no love and not being thankful...

BREATHING AS A CONNECTION WITH HEALTH AND LIFE.

Although breathing techniques have been used for centuries in different traditions and eastern cultures, its meaning and its use on the west, within the psychology and psychotherapy scope, are relatively recent.

Breathing is one of the basic points in several practices of multidimensional health. Some of these ancestral practices are: Yoga, meditation, Tai chi, Chi kung, and, some of the moderns ones are: Primal Therapy, Reichinian Therapy, Posture Integration, Bioenergetics, gestalt, Rebirthing and Holotrophic Breathing. They both acknowledge and reconfirm the importance of breathing within processes of transformation.

INHALING

From the early 70’s, some of us felt that something more than a technique has been developing itself. We call it “Inhaling” and it is called: Rebirthing. It is also known as Conscious and Connected Breathing or Breathwork.

The original “Inhaling”, was first developed and presented in USA by Leonard Orr at the early 70’s. It was quickly spread and it has been extensively taught and practiced throughout the world. It started being oriented on the personal and spiritual development scope but then, the method was the source of a number of techniques and therapeutic approximations to breathing. There is no doubt most of it is because of its simplicity, its power and its efficacy. It is a way to access inner spaces, heal past traumas and transform those “limiting personal believes’ systems” on new paradigms of perception, creating a better choice and greater freedom.

Rebirthing makes an original contribution to integral health through conscious and connected breathing and through deeply working with thoughts and their power.

Breathing is a powerful catalysts agent of altered states of consciousness. 30 years of experience with hundreds of Rebirthers, gives testimony on the capacity that conscious and connected breathing has. Without neither suggestion nor coercion, it allows the body to find its most adequate breathing rhythm and so, it stimulates memories to arise from our early childhood, from those stages on our intrauterine life and from recent memories. Those different experiences that are flourishing into our consciousness, can be integrated to access powerful transpersonal experiences.

PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS

“...An explanation on the mechanisms that produce the connection between an intense breathing and memories shown up from past experiences may be best illustrated by the study’s data offered by Dr. Lars AndrĂ©. He has gathered results from different sources of information concluding that a voluntary exposition of a long intense breathing produces psycho-physiological states similar to the experiments on phases of deep dreaming or of a slow wave. This could be interpreted as states of dreaming-wakefulness where we consciously access levels of deep brain activity, similar to those existing during the process of embryonal gestation, the first year of life and the first childhood”. A. Aguilar

ACCEPTING STRESS IS PART OF ITS HEALING

We find from the work on conscious and connected breathing, a reflexive-active philosophy that encourages personal transformation through “self-understanding” (becoming aware of who and how I am and where I am going), “accepting” and “acting consequently”. We go on recognizing that the body, mind, emotions and spirit are essentially interconnected and that the change on the state of one aspect makes changes on the others. Rebirthing, as a natural and holistic process that uses for its development two human beings’ fundamental stone posts: their breathing and their thinking, will support an individual to understand and accept that all resources are within himself/herself needed to develop his/her creativity and holistic potential.

Accepting that the natural state of the Self is one of peace, awareness and a balanced action (this does not mean being neither passive nor conformist) can be rediscovered. For it, we only need time, energy and space.

Stress is a state produced by a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual experience that was neither accepted nor globally integrated. It was not satisfactorily completed, it was a situation really lived or generated by a fantasy caused by the fear of “I cannot do it”. Therefore, the genuine possibility of fulfilling any experience is healing by itself. Rebirthing’s advantage is that it will complement those experiences the Self will decide through a breathing energetic fluidity to have them be understandable, resolved and integrated.

We will be developing a consciousness of the Self beyond the form and personality’s limitations, as we understand our nature and cultivate an “attitude of accepting” the cycles of our mood, our weaknesses and strengths and of our own existence.

ESSENTIAL STEPS TO STRESS’ TRANSFORMATION

Essentially, breathing is our inner resource that is available, simple, natural and powerful to catalyzed opened doors towards our inner state of the Self. Thinking does it too. That means, thinking is a natural powerful resource that could return to a genuine and profound simplicity. As a third resource, there are talents and natural gifts that every person has as part of their own raw material. Even if they were developed or not, they are and will always be people’s allies, as much as in time of a crisis as in time of creativity.

This is why healing methodologies that use these three inner elements and have them developed for their assimilation and expression, as much as internally as externally, are so valuable and successful.

RESULTS

A typical process of understanding, resolution and integration begins with making ourselves conscious as we start breathing more plentiful and relaxed independently of the action we will take. That means, equanimity begins to happen from the inside towards the outside and the result produced is that we are able of assuming our responsibility in life.

We cannot exactly measure many times, on the short term, what stress’ transformation is all about, specially if there was no “serious” diagnosis caused by itself. Nevertheless, it is easy and clear to feel how the transformation rebounds in our daily routine through our creativity and productivity expansion. Our answers stop being reactive and become responsible ones –this does not implies perfection, although, it is not excluded-. Discerning answers will add courage, awareness’ states and pause into our lives, making them be nucleuses impregnated by wisdom.

The person lives -breathes- relaxing himself/herself and breathes -living- in a circular rhythm. That means, facts of life not only have a beginning and an end. There are multiple points, in the middle of them, that are connected to other ropes of expansion. The person goes on keeping an intention and an attention focused on sensations, emotions, thoughts and memories as they come and go, experimenting and accepting these different phenomenon. Thus, the person accepts and heals stress. That person is encouraged to be relaxed, to accept and “let go”. That person will be developing a full consciousness of the Self in a continuing evolution that lives by its emotions, thoughts and actions from a different perspective. Then, he/she will be creating a new dynamics in life’s process, generating conscious and joyful relationships with himself/herself, with others and with his/her surrounding.

A REBIRTHING SESSION

“... When the client breathes, relaxes and keeps himself/herself aware, having an attitude of acceptance, an inner atmosphere is created that allows that repressed “material” to come out at the consciousness’ surface. Thoughts and memories that arrive to consciousness’ awareness have also their emotional counterpart and a physical reference point in the body. As the material emerges and circulates throughout the body/mind, physical tension is affected and, eventually, dissolved. Emotions, then, are experimented and expressed and conscious decisions are made. As a physical and emotional relief is produced, breathing becomes deep flowing more fully and spontaneously. The client is assisted to resolve and integrate his/her past experiences to progressively free his/her body/mind’s antique traumas to welcome a breath that circulates easier and with more freedom.

For many clients, Breathwork opens an spiritual dimension of living experiences that have never been experienced before. At some time, usually after crossing a relieved and integrated point, suddenly breathing becomes “free”. It is as if, in that moment, the body rediscovers its natural way of an effortless breathing. Barriers are dissolved and the Self’s concept expands, opening itself to a vast dimension of energy, light and transcendence. Being on this state, the person is “on the light” and “is the light”. The breathing’s experience “on the light” creates a deep state of relaxation, healing and integration. That inner peace, reconciliation and harmony’s resulting sensation can transcend into his/her daily life with a lasting effect.

As people physically and spiritually recomfort, they find themselves free to express their creativity, being more capable of adapting to life’s movement and of participating on creating a path of life of their choice”. J. Gee

CONSCIOUSNESS OF ABUNDANCE

Acknowledging and accepting our divine origin and of being co-creators of everything we choose on every instant, will take us to select thoughts that are nourishing, thoughts that will lead us to actions that will make us meet our needs. By the wisdom of the Self, that which knows that our potential is unlimited, and actually, all society’s potential is unlimited, and by submerging ourselves into that satisfaction of creating and producing adequate results at our moment of life, will wake us up and fill us with a consciousness of abundance. From this consciousness, it is easier to transform stress. Stress being nothing else than the idea that we are short of time, resources and possibilities.

“Inhaling”, “exhaling”, “being present”, “accepting and perfection” are 5 fundamental elements of rebirthing and life itself.
